Gorton#2's

I have two dry returns and just put a Gorton #2 valve on each return. They are two dry returns and are vented at the elbow. Two number 1's were suggested on each side, but the plumbing supply only had one #1 left. I wish the numer #2 Gorton's were as cheap as the number 1's. Any drawbacks to this setup? The plumbing supply did not talk up the Gortons too much. Did not know they even had them till they looked and had to wipe the dust off the box. Almost like the guy did not want to sell them to me. The mains are two inch and the dry returns are smaller in diameter. If they had the other Gorton valves, I would have done the whole house with the various Gortons that are suggested for the radiators. Already have noticed less or no hissing from the rads, except for one at the far end of the house. Could a number 2 Gorton pull steam out of a radiator or just air? Sorry for all the dumb questions but I really get a lot out of this site. Thanks ed

A properly working Gorton will vent only air
Gorton are top-notch, and the number 2s can only help. They were dusty and on a shelf cause they ain't cheap and most today - even contractors want a quick fix Mad Dog

Gorton #2 vs #1
The number #2 needs more room than a #1, lightens your wallet faster, and will vent the main ~ 4X faster (not a bad thing, but if the main was short enough and small enough you might no longer really notice the difference) than a #1, but won't pull steam from (or vent air from) the radiator itself.
I'd guess ITT/Hoffmann is a better known name than Gorton, hence the dust on the box.
The hissing rad probably wants a fast Gorton (maybe a #6, a C, or even a D on it), is it a big rad and/or on a long riser?0 -
The radiator is one of two on a long run. I vented the bigger of the two with a d that had been on another radiator. Nearly threw the d out when I was changing vents, I thought look at this old thing, before reading the wall and finding out about Gorton. The hissing radiator has a vent rite #1 open to eight. It's like it won't close and keeps hissing. I'll try a Gorton when I track some more down. They remind me of the Dole vents my Dad use to get except they have a stem where the Doles were stubbies. Thanks for the info on using the Gorton #2's. Will Gorton valves on all the radiators cause my heating bill to go up because they vent faster or save me money (I hope) because the boiler won't have to push as much air out of the vents? Thanks ed0 -
It should work fine
Too-big main vents are better than too-small ones.

I am no rich man but the money I am saving by having my number 2's is far greater then what I shelled out for them. I think they are the cheapest thing I have added to my system, heck the insulation costs more. Fuel prices keep going up. And the comfort that them little puppies provide is second to none. I dont think Gorton does a very good job of marketing and that is the reason there was dust on the box. I would be curious to know how many they sell because of the Wall I bet its one of there strongest advertisers and it doesnt cost them a nickel.

You're Right Bryan...they are an ol' mom & Pop
outfit. They been at it for over a hundred years - they probably don't need to advertise and maybe they have solid reasons for layin' low. I'm sure their sales have jumped since Noel, Steamhead, I and others are always touting them. Mad Dog

Gorton
I also learned about Gortons on The Wall. My local supplier had never heard of them. I special ordered a #2 directly from the factory (they were excellent to deal with) and now my system runs better than ever. I have since then located another supplier that does carry Gorton radiator air vents and have been replaing my rad vents with Gortons of various speeds (depending on distance from the boiler/size of the rad etc.) and now my whole system is so balanced and quiet I cannot imagine not having Gortons.0
