Just in case you guys got the idea that we only do steam........
Well, guys....The Gold Coast of Long Island is getting slammed with an early-season blizzard. So far, we've gotten 8 inches, with another 6-8 expected in the next 12 hours....everywhere that is EXCEPT on one of our very happy customer's driveway. We did this job in the summer, and I have been very apprehensive - to say the least - that this bad boy would actually melt the snow. I followed Mark Eatherton's advice and designs to the tee, and I was not disappointed. The slab is steady at 39 degrees and melting away. The owner was so happy he wants to call the newspaper to come out and do a story on it. It is in a very visible-highly-trafficed area, so I am looking foward to this job getting alot of attention. He was so happy in fact that he gave me and Joey the helper 2 Cuban Cohiba Cigars (I despise Fidel, but I will be celebrating the Continued dominance of capitalism over Communism - This ones for you..Fidelito!!!!!!!) and I'm smokin' it. I don't some cigs, but I bummed off of Joey for a little celebratory puff. I'll be on the Hunt for Holohan this afternoon with Joey's 4 wheeler. We want to "drag:" him out (shouldn't be hard) to his favorite Bar BK Sweeney's where I will down several fine American Bourbons. - A Very Happy and relieved Mad Dog

First and Last Photos
Tell the story, nice clear, clean driveway, and a sloppy looking road. Those two photos should sell at least another job or two. I didnt see the photo of the homowner buring his shovel.
Nice work MD

Snow Density?
You get those boilers from the gas company's free boiler program;-) Seriously though. How dense is the snow that's dumping on your clients drive? By the looks of the street at the end of the driveway, he might be able to make it to the street and have no place to go.
Here West of Boston, it's been really light stuff. I'm guessing it's pretty slush like down there eh? I'm truely amazed by it's preformance so far. How many BTU's/Sq. Ft. are you designed for ,,, 300>/Sq.Ft.?
The (real test) will be this evening as the Temp. drops and the wind speed carries away all those precious cubic Ft. of gas. Please keep us advised of how it preforms as this white stuff is expected to keep comming down for quite a while longer. Think it will keep up with the demand? You watch the gas meter spinning yet? I,ve been curious about tracking the useage of gas durring a snow melt. Sitting home reading the Kitec's Snow Melt design manual today wishing I had it in my driveway:-( Here comes the plow again.
Nice looking job Matt. Looks like ME knows how to melt East coast snow as well as the champagne powder of the Rockys. He's a good teach eh? Now you know how it's done as well.
Well done Mr. Mad Dog Sweeney. Melter of snow & Steam guru.

Thanks for all the nice compliments
It is designed around 100-103 btus per s.f. Worked fine thru the night. I tried to get them from the gas co. but they said the usage is intermmittent. A few years ago I would have got em for free when they were desperate to sell gas. I would like to put a small sub meter on each boiler to clock the gas, but I think the Tekmar control can put me in ballpark with time ran et cetera. Mad Dog

The next time my drive way is resurfaced, i'm going to have it
ripped out and install snow melt, have you ever installed tubing under black top? My only concern is the roller, but if I bedded the tubing in stone dust I don't think that would be a problem.0 -
When I get a few minutes I'll post
pics of the wholw job, pal...Mad Dog

can't stop looking
this has to be the coolist thing done with a heating system. period0 -
Great looking job Mad Dog. I have one question is there any concern about the pavers heaving with the expansion and contraction?
Bryan0 -
Where does the melted water go? I would think you'd end up with a bunch of ice somewhere, or does it just evaporate?
The system looks impressive - it would be interesting to see how much gas it uses for a "typical" storm.0 -
I was concerned about that and made sure
the paving contractor had plenty of trough drains that go to dry wells. I also ran the tubing very close to the trough drains to help with water flow when things got goin'. If you take a handful of snow it doesn't leave much of a puddle in relation to its frozen state size. As the snow fell, the melted water gently rolled =awat towrd the drains.

I was concerned with that too!!!!!
but the slab comes up to temp very slowly and descends slowly - no sudden shocks. I think ME said the thick 2" polystyrene underneath also helps in this regard. Mad Dog
