Pumping away from the basement to the 2nd floor - doing a loop around the
2nd floor - at the end of the loop, can I jump up into the attic and then
back down with the return?

Sure.
You just have to allow for the extra height when setting your pressure in the boiler and the expansion tank. Of coarse the pipes can not be put into an environment where they will freeze, but you knew that.0
