The piping looks like the crew does steam every day . Most heating guys who don't work with it would be amazed on how hard it is to pipe a steam boiler right , while trying to keep all the pipes level and straight . And with 2 steam takeoffs to the system , and the return piping done all in black steel , you did a hell of a job .

It doesn't look like too much fun piping the boiler on the right side . Where was this install , in a cavern ? See any stalactites or bats down there ?

Excellent work Chris , Lou and Scott . The end product looks like something out of a steam manual .

    We joined the club

Or as Chris says He joined the club.

This is the most recent Steam job we've done and of course we had to follow our Wallie brothers :). Actually Chris and I we wating for a steam job just to do one.

This is a Burnham IN8LNC. I sized it to the Radiation and then added a little for piping pick up. Chris and our new helper Lou ripped out the old and piped in the new.

    Great work Chris.

    Resize photos

I posted that from the new laptop and hav'nt figured out how to resize them with the new program. So its back to the old machine for some proper viewing.

By the way, the customer can't believe how quite and quick the new system is. The insualtion goes on next week after another skim.

    Thanks Noel.....

I wish I knew about this when I worked in Marblehead. It would have saved me a lifetime of Not having the room I needed.

Things change, and the more I learn, the less I know. I call it the "happy juxtiposition". If I ain't moving forward, I'm going backwards, and that isn't right.

Thanks for the great comments. Chris

    Outstanding JCA and Scott!!!!!!!

Very impressive and I'm very happy to see cast Iron fittings - gives that exalted look. On the return, I always install a gate valve or at least a ball valve as the wet return rises up in to the Hartford loop to facilitate complete flushing of the wet returns. I would put it where that union is. Tremendous job though. Any relation to Helen "GURLEY" Brown? Mad Dog

    After....

All the copper work, and using the ProPress tool I've done lately, I thought that my body would be aching from using the pipe wrenches for the amount of time it took.

Surprisingly, I didn't hurt as much as I thought it would.
I, and the homeowners like the results. Thanks to all Wallies for the drive to try something different. ( I would have said new...but we all know that we're just finding that the DEADMEN knew it first) Chris
  • very nice piping

it actually makes it easier to do the header dropping it, dont you think..drier steam, easier, nicer install,,thats a win-win every time..
  • Nice work Chris...

    Thanks Tim.

Fortunately, the rock came with the basement. It has been both, a blessing and a curse. Sometimes it helps, other times it's in the way, know what I mean? Chris

    VXT feeder

I've used them a number of times, I think they are most beneficial on systems with underground returns, They tell you how much water is being fed into the boiler and they come with a chart to give you an idea of how much make-up water is allowable given the BTU rating of the boiler.

Wouldn't a three inch header make drier steam?

    Nice looking job for sure!
I agree with you though on the isolation valve on the wet return. You didn't mention it, but I assume that you also install a tee with a drain valve on the wet return side of that valve so you can drain the return and keep steaming on the boiler side.

I don't mean to be critical, but, with two 2" risers and two 2" take offs I would have make the header 3". Of course I'm not sure what the boiler btu load is. Perhaps it is so small it doesn't make any difference. I would be real curious what the velocity of the steam going through that one two inch header is. Usually, we just increase to three inch at the second riser and go back to 2" after the 3" drop to the equalizer.

    IN7-12 piping diagram

does call for a 3-inch header. That said, I can't tell for sure from the photo what size the header is...........
