Best Programmable Thermostat for Steam

Any suggestions out there for a programmable thermostat for a steam system? I am looking at the Honeywell 3600 or Honeywell 8602. I'm not sure there is much a difference between these two, although apparently the 8602 has a brighter display. Honeywell specifically says that these models are suitable for steam systems.

I know the Heat Pump version (8611) of the 8600 series has some annoying traits, such as when you temporarily adjust the temp you cannot view the room temperature. Maybe there is something better out there? Hunter? White-Rodgers?

I'm looking for a 5-1-1 day or a 7 day programmable tstat with intelligent recovery. The hour meter that the Honeywell 3600 has is a desirable feature too.

I've found for Hot water and steam

That the Honeywells are the way to go. The adjustable cycle rate is really appropriate as is the fact that recovery speed is monitored so the system will be cycled on and off during recovery which I don't believe the competitors do. This helps prevent overshoot which occors so easily when coming out of setback with steam or gravity water conversions.

Unless you want to spend hours tweaking them.........

I dont recommend ANY programmable on steam. We use a Honeywell T-87 and have the ho find a comfortable setting and LEAVE IT! Mad Dog

To Upgrade my Thermostat or Not

    Mad Dog,

I saw your recent install and it looks great. I wish there was somebody I could rely on like that down here in Carolina.

So, I've got an old (70's or 80's) White Rodgers, with the little lever that goes up and down for hotter and colder. It works great with the A/C as far as I can tell, and it seems to work great with the heat too. Doesn't get too hot, heats up quickly enough.

BUT!!!!! Heating bill is astronomical. Now, this weekend, I'll be installing some 1" Fiberglass insulation on the pipes which run in the airy crawlspace under the house. There has been no insulation since we moved in 1.5 years ago. Shoud I just stay with my good old trusty thermostat and be happy? Or "upgrade" to programmable?

    Thanks.

See how the insulation works out.....

if it lowers bill. The t-stat may or may not be the cause. Mad Dog
