Welcome to the Drop Header Club

Looks good from what I can see. However, that main vent has been leaking and may be too small. Is it an old Warco?

    real steam fittings

Steam fittings look serious. will never get used to bl. mal. fittings on headers etc. they just look so flimsy and unprofessional. i realize they are probably more than adequate and easier to work with but i just hate the look.

The fittings are c.i., but one or two may be mal. but that was all the local supplyhouse had and the customer was without heat.

The previous boiler was leaking in two places and collaped the chamber, so I shut it down at the firomatic. The valve at the feeder was passing and filled to the point were water wa leaking out the vent. I am going to see how the vent holds up and change if necessary. I did't want to be Dr. Doom to the customer by saying everthing was bad and installed wrong. Because naturally it worked before.

Boy those dropped headers are popping up everywhere! It still needs a drain line on the relief valve (no?), a bit of insulation, and a new main vent -- up on a nipple if there's room -- but they should be nice and warm now.

I think your right about the amin vent up on a nipple I think I have the room. As far as the insulation and drain valve on the relief valve the pics were taken as soon as we fired it up we still have to go back and do a few more things, skim, tie feeder back in which I am not to found of, insulate, and remove old boiler. Main thind was to make it safe and get it running before they froze.

Nice job and as far as I can see you've only got a reducing coupling thats not CI. I would'nt worry to much.

It would be nice to get that vent back from the last ell so the steam dos'nt slam into it.

    paint

    Hey Patrick,

Great looking job! Just a suggestion. When I get done with a steam boiler I paint the pipes with rustolieum high temp. paint. The color I use is smoked grey. It dresses up the job nicely. The customers I have always say it looks like a cadillac in the basement.
  • Nice job Patrick

Always nice to see one of our V8 Steamers piped so nicely! Thanks for taking pride in your work and for using our products!

One question though. I am assuming that this was not a packaged boiler, but a knocked down version and that your distributor might have put together the control package out of his shelf stock. I say this because our standard LWCO is the Hydrolevel Cycle Guard with foam check feature and High Limit is L404A instead of PA404A. Not that it really makes any discernable difference, but it just caught my eye. Nice job!

    Nice looking

job..Ill be joing the drop header club soon!!! :) 1 questionis didyou plug 1 riser holeor on that boiler was there only1 riser tapping???Great boiler we use alot of the Burnham line and support is top of the line!!! Richard

Yes, I plugged the rear tapping but if I had more room and time I would have used both tappings but it gets kind of long to tie in supplies between the last tapping and equalizer. This installation the supplies were almost directly above boiler and it would have got kind of messy looking coming all the way back to tie in. If I am not mistaken you only need both if you are using 5 section upward.

Pat, before you select a main vent

measure the length and diameter of the steam main (and any other mains in the house), and this will tell you how much air you have in the pipe. With this info, you can select a vent that will let the main fill with steam FAST! You'll look like a hero to the customer.
