Creosote

I have a 1930's vintage coal boiler that had a Riello installed through the observation door about 4 years ago.
The unit emits an odor that reminds me of a Timken. The chimney also is coated with what appears to be a form of creosote. I thought the smell would eventually burn off and go away, but it has'nt. What can be done to remedy this, outside of changing the boiler?
