domestic hot water and heating in the same unit ?

i am in maryland, and i see units that supply the domestic hot water to homes and the heating through the same unit with out a heat exchanger. is this legal in my area or is there a place i could look of regulations. me i would never do this for myself or a customer. and what is this called ( technical name ) thanks david fauver

this is called an....
open heating system, and a source of much consternation here on the wall. Best way to find out is call your local plumbing code official/inspector.Even if it's is code, it's not a good idea. kpc
