At the risk of being shelled for saying it, why the uproar over this? What this company, other Internet companies and many, many contractors are installing is, as of now, legal in almost all places. Being legal and being technically correct have little to do with each other. My website has a large presence on the Internet so I get asked about systems like the ones that are being touted as the “greatest” this or that frequently. The first thing I ask is “Does it make sense to you?” Mostly, after seeing my site, they are puzzled as to how the products offered by some of these companies can work. So?………..Wham, meathook! From there, if the client is serious, the advantages of dealing with us are obvious.

People that would blindly buy products like these are probably not the kind of clients any of us would want, since it seems the only reason that I could think of for buying these is because they are inexpensive to purchase. Certainly not because they are efficient, environmentally friendly or will last a long time. The only thing we as a group can do to advance the radiant industry is by having one satisfied client after another.

Do you want to compete with the likes of these Internet guys? Spend the money and get a kick **** website up that emphasizes the way radiant should be done. John Perry had a great idea about linking all of our websites together and creating a network of “A” caliber contractors around the country. Great idea! Does your work measure up?

I believe too much energy is being wasted worrying about things we have no control over. These companies will not put any of us out of business and if this one or that one goes away, their spot will be filled by another guy who may be even worse.

What goes around, comes around.

I suppose you're right; there's probably no reason to lose sleep over this guy's antics. But it just sticks in my craw that there are people in this industry that are doing a diservice to our customers by selling this crap. I tend to take things personally that I shouldn't and take ownership of things that aren't really mine. If my neighbor has installed a system that doesn't perform as advertised is it really my problem? No. But when he talks to his neighbor and says, given the opportunity, he would never install another radiant system, that does become my problem. Word-of-mouth is the most powerful form of advertising and I do all I can to make sure that it remains positive. That's why I think we need to remain vigilant and try to keep these guys honest.

    yup

But we didn't fire the first shot over the bow. He did & in it he painted all of us with a broad brush. It warrants a response IMHO.

Do I care if he sells his wares on the net or elsewhere? Not one bit. But, don't denigrate my work in order to make sales and if you're going to make claims on a public bulletin board regarding the benefits or performance and can't or won't back them up with facts - expect a drubbing.

I’ve been following this post and this company for some time now. I have the same feelings as hb as we talked a little about this company in Vegas. I have seen some of the designs and installations and even been asked to install their systems by customers that bought material from them. I inform the people that it is not up to our standards and then they ask why? Wham…..meat hook. I love that! Thanks Larry! I feel this company has been given too much time in free advertising and promotion by yes us! They are like a pimple on a bear’s ****, it will pop some day. Look at how much money they spend on advertising! They are all over the trade magazines. Look at how much money they spend on the internet. They are right up there on the search engines. Look at how much they spent sending out literature to most of us to hawk and set up to use their products and to become installers for them. You don’t get there people without spending money! So sooner or later they will run out of money and hopefully will go away and hopefully they will go broke tired.

The only way to fight them is to educate the public. I have to be careful here because we went down this road in Vegas. Right Dan! And by the way you didn’t eat all your cookies!

For all those opposed to the open system way of doing things how many of you are an RPA member?

    I'm not, JP.

But when I was, there was a movement inside the organization to recommend disallowing this practice. Ultimately, it was defeated, I believe, by the membership. That can be taken a couple of different ways. Another reason for my departure.

As far as the company in question, they are really a bit player. I have more issues with some of local contractors in my region doing work that is unprofessional. That, it seems, will do more long term damage to the radiant industry than anything, including U.P.S. Radiant Inc.

Suffice it to say, this company will not take work from my company and will most certainly increase my service revenues over the coming years.
