NON-FERROUS COMPONENTS

DaveGateway
DaveGateway Member Posts: 568
I'm trying to design a totally non-ferrous hydronic system.

I'm having trouble finding an expansion tank that doesn't have steel in contact the hydronic water!
Even the double diaphram Amtrol doesn't prevent this!

Also boilers?
The MZ boilers do have steel in contact with the water!
Does the Munchkin? Any other condensing choices?

Thanks for any help

    potable water x-tank

won't do the job? Just let the pressure down to 12psi or as req'd.

    boiler options

Munchkin, Trinity, Vitodens, Baxi, Takagi, Rinnai ...... you have many choices. Why non-ferrous? Enjoy.......Dan

    NON-FERROUS COMPONENTS?

    Scrook,
Would a potable water x-tank meet code?
    Thanks

    NON-FERROUS COMPONENTS?

    Dan, thanks for the input.
NO steel internal components, that contact the water, in all those boilers that you listed?
My reason for non-ferrous is cost!
Both the Wirsbo & Kitek manuals state the their non-O2 barrier PEX will work just fine IF all components are non-ferrous.
The savings on the cost of the PEX will pay for the bronze pumps.
    Thanks

    Another answer

would be treat the system with Rhomar 922 which has an o2 scavenger in it as well as multiple metal corrosion inhibitors. As long is the level of treatment is kept up
(a yearly ck up) this would allow you to use the boiler of your choice. On the other hand saving on the pex tubing may not allow you all the choices that are available.

    Non-Ferrous

The Munchkin has a 100% stainless steel heat exchanger. The only other material involved on the water side is the brass on the sensors and the brass supply and return nipples.
    Hope that this helps.

    I have used

potable water expansion tanks, also. Check the temperature rating, mine have all been low temperature radiant, which run cooler than most DHW.

Reduce the pressure, and get a 3/4 X 1/2" brass reducing coupling to connect them.

You might get the manufactures spec sheet and blessing if code compliance is an issue.

Plenty of non ferous heat sources. I see Lochinvar now glass lines the cast iron headers on their hydronic boilers, making them non ferrous, kind of.

    Stay conscious..

Be sure that the tubing you purchase is cross linked. Many of the COLD water tubing is a straight PE pipe and not rated for heating temps. I'd spend on tubing and do it right the first time - it's permanent! If you want to shave pennys you can reduce the # of zones or consolidate controls. Enjoy....Dan

    Dan,
Both the Wirsbo & Kitek manuals state that their non-O2 barrier PEX will work just fine IF all components are non-ferrous! PEX = cross-linked polyethylene! Its not pennies, its about $150.00 - $250.00 / 1000' of 1/2"
    Thanks

    NON-FERROUS COMPONENTS?

    Hot Rod,
thanks for the input. I was unable to extract the upper temp. limit for a DHW X-tank from Amtrol's clunky web site! I could hang a 50' loop of leftover PEX up by the TJIs to cool the water before it enters X-tank?
