I am looking to flush a high volume residental boiler system of scale, rust, and old piping build up. I will be replaceing boiler, mains, circulators, and rad valves. All risers, and rads are staying. What chemicals does anyone recomend, should I do this before or after new install of materials? The new rad valves will be of the thermostatic type. How do you tell when chemical treatment is completely flushed? I am also in the dark about how to get the chemical in the boiler. Any suggestions?

Hey Kevin,
Since you mention a circulator, we must assume this is a water system - not steam.
To clean the system I would flush out whatever's in there by logical means - and then put a cup of TSP or MEX per 100,000 BTU's of boiler rated input into the system and let it run for a day or two - making sure the detergent reaches all zones, and radiation. If the boiler or radiation is large, double the dosage.
Then drain and rinse again and then do your magic with the replacement.
If the water and detergent come out really funky and near chocolate milk color, do it again!
That should do the job.

I like
to use a hydronic system cleaner, lots of brands out there. It has a bit more "stuff" in it than plain soap (tsp)
Now, if for some reason it has build up from continous hard water make up I go with Hercules Sizzle. An acid based system cleaner that cuts hard water (calcium and lime)build up. More commonly used in DHW sides of HX's and batch HW boiler tubes, but I have had to use it in systems connected to hard water make ups.
Any cleaner is better than nothing. Hydronic blended types clean, protect, and buffer the PH.
Rhomar, Rectorseal, Calgon, Stewart Hall, Silver King, Hercules, are some common brands.
Acid based usually come with litmus paper strips to check the ph after you do the final flush. Some, like Stewart Hall have a neutralizer packet included.
You need to watch the ph at the end of the process, so you don't go from bad to worse
You'll need a pump, at least, maybe a pro to help with the process.

Use Rhomar . Talk to George.
It's amazing how much "stuff" comes out of a closed loop system after using their Hydro-Solv. It doesn't belong in there. Keep the same from happening by using their hydronic conditioner after you get it cleaned out. I use it. It really works. Great people too.
