Bar code inventory, oh, oh!

A couple of months ago (7) we started a bar code system for the inventory on the trucks and in the shop. Today a tech came into my office and wanted to know what was the problem that he couldn't get any 3/4 c x c 90's? He said that the bins were empty and have been for several weeks. I punched up the code into the computer, and it said "you have 2,316 in inventory" Well, not a one in the bins! I happened to notice that the 3/4" St. 90's were overflowing and stacked in boxes on the floor. Yep! same bar code for both and now we have a few more than 4000 St. 90's in stock! Gonna have to make a deal with the supply house tomorrow! Geeeezh! Another fine mess you've gotten me into Ollie!

    Save 'em

And buy 4000 more now. You see where the prices are going!

    With all due respect...

it ain't the technology it's the people. As he said, both parts had the same bar code. Once it gets worked out it should be fine. Blame the beancounters or whoever made up the bar codes for not knowing the difference, the computer only did what it was told. But you might want to look at any other inventory items that look out of line to make sure the same thing is not going on elsewhere. Maybe even do a physical inventory to see what's up and catch problems before they get worse. Just some thoughts from an old bean counter.

    Technology enables more

people to make more mistakes more quickly. Good thing we are not measuring lenses for the Hubble.

    Funny

You know it's funny, a few weeks ago when someone was asking about just why his unions were leaking under pressure, no one blamed the pipe wrench. All the suggestions were on how to use the tool more appropriately.

Computers are a very powerful tool. They are as dumb as a brick (after all silicon chips are made from sand!) but they will take your intelligence and multiply it many times.

Someone in your company didn't use this tool properly. Fix it and it will work wonders for you.

Heck, I looked all around the office for someone to blame, but it was ME who did the dirty deed! :( No one to blame but the bozo who is typing this too! I think I should have paid a bit closer attention on that item at the time I did it! Everything else seems to be in balance, so it must have been a one time hiccup! (I hope)
