Nice job, ME. Are you using the Cascade control and low loss header? What are the heat emitters in the building. -DF

    The Vito brothers...

This is a little project that we did for the Colorado Govenors office of Energy Management and Conservation . It was an apartment complex over in Grand Junction. It was 5 lbs of sugar in a 2 pound bag for sure...

Initially, the Vito brothers are only doing DHW duty. That was so we could shut down the 2 each 3.5 mill fire breathing dragons that USED to do DHW duty. Now that the systems are de-coupled, during the summer we can make some major modifications to the space heating system, including base loading the space ehating system with the Vitodens boilers.

The property was realizing a 50% reduction in consumption during periods of non space heating. Our target savings is 40% of the annual consumption, which shouldn't be a problem.

See, I do deal in boilers other than the Munchkin!

BTW, this is the installation that was the subject of the articles I recently wrote about commercial heating/DHW systems.

    Enjoy!

It's a tight one... 3 each 120 gallon Phase 3 tanks, 3 Vitodens piped one per tank. Tanks were piped parallel reverse return, were pressure tested prior to bringing them online. Other than down time to cut in cold water and hot water valves for the new tank battery, bringing the new system online was virtually seamless...

To save time on the job, we poured the storage tanks housekeeping pads in the back of our high cube van on a Friday. This allowed it to set up well enough to be carried into the job Monday afternoon, set in place and immediatley loaded with the TTP3 tank. Worst milage the truck has ever gotten:-) We only had 3-1/2 days to get the system installed and online. Between myself (wounded duck), and my two young able bodied assitants (Justin Kelekian and Brian Cordova) we got the job pretty well done.

Unfortunatley, due to a control issue on one of the Vitos' we were unable to bring the whole works online until the following week. 7 hours one way for a service call that you know you're not going to be reimbursed for does not leave a good feeling in your lower back side...

    Oh well, it happens:-(

    At present...

the Cascade control will be a part of phase two, to be completed this summer. Currently, we have a tekmar doing staging and OSA reset on the two fire breathing dragons. We will be doing project management and controls on phase 2, but will be depending upon local talent to perform the major piping changes to the mechanical room.

    Emmitters are BBR's, unfortunatley...

THe system has a 7.5 hp base mount pump that has NO bypass. Consequently, the residents use the windows in their apartments to maintain a comfortable temperature. Now hows THAT for efficiency...

Our next step will be to set the two fire breathiing, money eating dragons up as secondaries, along with piping the Vitos as secondaries into the heating system, along with adding a variable speed controller to the 7.5 HP pump, and running the pump on delta T. By piping as P/S I saw no need for LLH'ers.

The system is a district heating system that is a long city block in length, and a short city block wide with NO insulation on the underground piping. It was built and installed back when energy was cheap.

    Don't I wish....

We tried to get soome third party investors involved on a "shared savings" basis, but couldn't get any takers. If I'd had enough money of my own, I'd have done it. We're looking at a simple pay back of less than 7 years for the phase one retrofits alone!

Only b4 picture I have is of the production table.
