vent damper

I have a Burnham Series 2 boiler it does not have a vent damper on it. I wanted to know if installing one will save a decient amount on the heating cost over time. The damper will cost me $147.00. I have been told that it will rase the efficiency approximately 8 to 10 percent which I belive would definately pay for itself. Also it is a standing pilot unit.

  • Vent Damper

I dunno; 8 - 10 percent sounds awfully high to me.

Many of my customers want the vent damper removed from the system or put in service mode (always open) because they are so troublesome.

It's my experience that whatever money you save will be spent in vent damper repair costs. But that's just me.

  • The savings

you will appreciate in installing the vent damper is generally only a few percentage points depending on possible standby losses where it is installed and other factors. My question is how old the boiler actually is and whether it was originally configured for a vent damper. There may be an additional few parts or devices required to make this boiler operate the vent damper if it wasn't originally configured to do so. I would also need to know whether the boiler is a 24 volt standing pilot model or Millivolt. let me know the whole Model Number and Serial Number and I'll be able to tell you more. And by the way, possible required maintainance cost of the vent dampers is really minimal due to the quality of the dampers we utilize these days. Hope this helps.

    glen the model number

is P-204-W. Serial number 17 144416 and it has a 24 vac gas valve. There is also a plate in the boiler that says "may be used with automatic vent damper SPG-05-14" Thank you for your time
  • That boiler

was built and shipped to New Brunswick in 1987 when dampers were optional and is equipped to operate with a 5" Vent Damper. These can be obtained through any Burnham distributor. If purchased through a Burnham distributor, it will have come from us and it will be equipped with the wire harness that will plug into a mated Molex plug in the boiler vestibule. Hope this helps.

    If your boiler

was installed in an old house that used to have a coal-fired boiler, the chimney draft is probably powerful enough to suck most of the heat out of the boiler during the off cycle. Yes, I know this boiler has a draft hood to keep the draft over the fire low enough, but in a situation like that a damper will make a bigger difference than usual.
