Had a call the other day where the customer complained of a smell from the boiler. Upon arrival the h/o indicated that the boiler had been making hissing sound's and banging for a week or two...He also stated that he could hear a waterfall sound every now and then..Upon inspection of the boiler we found that the casing had actually melted and that the boiler was dry..It had split the casting in a number of location's. It was a Weil Mclain with a triple aquastat..Guess they can run without water for awhile..In the two week's it had run the temp was down in the teen's..

BTW..the new boiler now has a low water cut off...maybe they should become standard with new boiler's...worst part was this boiler was only a year old...pile of scrap metal now....

    Saw one like that a few years back.

    Boiler was installed in a pool room closet and was used to heat the pool.

    May it rest in peace.

    Yes, T/L MiniTherm...

    There was a leak in the heating system. The "competition" that intsalled the boiler in the first place replaced it three times in 4 years, not under warranty. Not one of them mention to him that they thought there might be a leak in his heating system....

    When he called me on the phone to ask my opinion, I listened to his tale of woe, asked a few questions and told him there was a leak in his system. He was on well water, HARD well water.

    I replaced the boiler with a cast iron boiler that could be fired without circulation, kept it hot and pressurized and he found and repaired his leak. System now has a low water fuel cut off device, a low pressure cut off device, and no solid connection to the make up system.
