I am lookig for opinions on an efficient oil furnace for a new construction addition. I reall only need a gross of less than 60kbtu. I have looked at monitor, but seems pricey for not much efficiency, opinions on buderus, de dietrich, any us manufacturers worth investigating?

I am trying to get some info so i can hold an intelligent conversation with said heating guy. Some guys know what they know and little else. If guy has been selling 'x' for 20 years, he will suggest 'x' even though it may not be the best cost/maint/effic. if I find the best boiler, I may have to find a guy to install it, rather than the other way round

    fair enough

Will depend on the application and installation!! If you have done a heat loss, does the addition require 60k? what heats the rest of the house/building? sounds like alot for an addition possibly because of fuel choice ! lots of questions other than whats the best, you may pay more up front to save on the long haul. Of course he will want to work with what he is used to, but ask him about upgrades. Does he mess with indirect water heater, may be a way to use up some of them extra btu's during the lean months.

    Look at Viessmann

Vitola 87% AFUE. You also have to look at total system efficiency. The Vitola has large water volume, that means longer run times. 3" of insulation, very little stand by losses. No minnimum return water temp, better outdoor reset. Stainless steel combustion chamber, gets to steady state efficiency faster, less soot, quiet opperation. Swing open door for easy accses cleaning. There is alot more!!!

    absolutely.

I have done a heat loss, and my max loss[its a big addition, 1800 ft] is 40 something, can't remember, so a gross of 60 seems safe. Besides, haven't seen many oil boilers under 50 anyway. I'm really looking for some 'stay away from x', 'y is ok but be careful of whatever', 'z is great'.
It is really difficult to find head to head other than afue numbers.

    cost vs. payback?

I wonder if these are available where keith is located, are they supported there? too many questions before the analogies start to fly!

See, and I have seen some tout smaller water volume as more efficient. They seem to include the electronics, which buderus has separate. Is this a big advantage? what is the cost differential on the veismann vs a basic boiler[I know it isn't that simple, approximations only]

i am in mass, so we can get most anything. The idea would be , of course that I wouldn't need support!!! [best laid plans and all that]
