lawsuits

These are mostly bogus or distorted stories, but if you apply the concept of the Mcdonalds suit to what we do for a living it becomes food for thought. Aren't many of the copper pipes on heat supply systems hot enough to cause severe burns. What about the pressure relief valves we all see with no or improper down piping? What about all the free advice given on this site? Can this be fodder for a lawsuit? Can you be held responsible for advice to a novice or homeowner who tries to save money by attempting their own repairs or installs? Just some pre workday thoughts.

Lets face it...it only takes 1...with a greedy lawyer.

Nothing is your own fault...there is always SOMEONE you can blame..right? (check with your lawyer...he'll agree)

You might also want to check..

On the liability you have for free advice. I believe that it is generally none. No consideration, no contract thus no liability. Check with your mouthpiece but, I believe that's the way it is.

There is no liability coverage for

    passing on information, FACT!

It's not considered a good deed, it's considered 'professional conduct' in the eyes of the courts. Remember that in liability law 'no good deed goes unpunished'.

In addition there is the copyright issue and once it's posted here it's copyrighted to the owner (Dan).

    common claim

over on alt.hvac the claim of liability for, and risk of being sued over, advice given to "homemoaners" is commonly given as an excuse for not doing so.

However, I have yet to see anyone there provide an actual case where it's happened.
