Ceiling crumbling near steam pipe

We keep fixing the plaster around a steam pipe but the heat and moisture keep destroying the work. Any idea of a product (possibly an insulator ring?) that would work in preventing the pipe from destroying the fresh plaster each time?

    Make sure,

The valve the pipe is attached to OR the pipe itself isn't leaking FIRST! Then I would buy a Wrapped fiberglass tube, make the hole big enough to fit it in,and plaster it with the insulation hanging down a foot or so below it . Once the plaster fully dries, cut he insulation flush with the ceiling and find or make a decorative ring to pretty it up. Chris

Steam pipes move naturally when they heat and cool. If you are plastering right up to the pipe you'll NEVER get the plaster to stay.

Remember that the length of the pipe (and the diameter as well) change with temperature--no way to stop it.

The steam pipes themselves shouldn't be producing moisture in ANY form--EVER. If so, you have a problem.
