Weather's changing

here; I drove north to Fairfield yesterday, just south of the wine country and saw the mustard blooming in this vineyard. That usually means 4-6 weeks to go until the warm days get regular.

    He Said....

As the temperature was hitting a high of 13°F, with squalls of snow you can't even see through.

    yup

got a call this past week asking for a price on an oil burner for a maple sap boiler. He's tired of wood. I'm sure the price will be negotiable with barter for some prime NY maple syrup :) Going price is about $ 34/ gallon.

    Won't be long now.

    there's some btu's !

can't fit 2. At first I thought you meant 2 gallons of syrup. We use that in a year, so I'm shootin' for at least that much.

Need to figure the angle and capacity. Calling RWB this week to spec it.

    There's nothing

like real maple syrup. I got family in upstate NY and they have been making maple syrup for 200 years. The farm just had it's bi-centenial. When I was a kid we used a horse drawn sled with a large tank on it. We'd hang out in the sugar house and sample the sweet stuff and come back to our familys all wild eyed from the sugar rush. Then they moved up to tractors pulling the sled. Now they have tubing run from each tree, all the way to a pumping station that moves the sap to the Sugar house. (I wonder if it's PEX) My Uncle walks the lines with a repair kit in case of squirrels trying to get to the sweet stuff.

    Alan,

does the mustard have a smell? That's a beautiful photo. Thanks.
    Retired and loving it.
  • No, no smell,

but talking about sweet things, the bees really go for it.

Mustard belongs to the Cruciferae (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, etc.) family. The flower has 4 petals and looks like a cross, so they named the family after the crucifix.

    April is the cruelist month

says the poet e.e. cummings. I say March. It's a big tease between the warm and cold weather. I'll just be glad when the extreme cold goes away. My outdoor digital thermometer said 0.5 F this morning. I could hear loud popping in the woods behind my house. At first I thought it was gun shots but, it was still dark out. It was more likely branches or something giving up and snapping due to the extreme cold. Come on spring. Can't wait to shave off my beard. WW
