strange steam piping

have a one pipe steam boiler that has had piping changes. near the end of a main, that i have already put a #75 hoffman vent, the piping has been redone so there is now a drop down to the floor, then back up to a return that runs up along and around 2 walls then drops back down to the floor and over to the hartford loop. keeping water in this boiler seems to be impossible. it goes off on 1-1/2# pressure all the time pushing the water out of the system. do you think it is dirty at the drop near the trap under the air vent and not giving me some back pressure to hold the water?. or is there even a need for this trap?. i assume they put this in to make the higher return a wet return. i am returning to the job to flush the returns with water the system is dirty and will squick it any ideas? thanks
