Aprilaire zone controller

Not knocking any brand at all - just asking... I have a client with an Aprilaire 6202 two-zone controller on a Lennox Complete Heat about 5 yrs. old. Unit is used for forced air heating/cooling. Once in a great while (3 or 4 times a winter), T-stats will show heat call, but heating unit fails to operate. Only caught it one time in the act. One T-stat calling for heat, tested for 24V at zone controller: had power from T-stat to controller - 'Heat Call' LED was not lit & no power going to unit from zone controller. Depressed the Time Delay button and unit operated normally since. I thought perhaps one zone had recently operated and the Time Delay was protecting the unit, but client insists it had a couple of hours since unit operated at all and low room temps backed his statement. Anyone with Aprilaire experience have similar problems? We do not install this brand and so far have not had similar problems with those we installed. Thanks -Greg

    Many potential probs......

OK,.....Lennox usually used a microprocessor and occationally this interfears with unmatched components. Isolation relays on the heat and fan circuits may solve prob.. Also independant t-former should be powering stats, which is connected through the board.
Also could be lock-out prob. Check Micro-amps on flame signal. Could be almost anything....

    brand

That doesn't happen just with Lennox.

I have a customer that has that exact same problem with her AA system, but it's not on that brand.

She hates to get up in the cold AM to reset it, but the replacement cost (for a new system)is more than she can handle.

I would check all the electrical connections. Expecially the grounds. More times than not it turns out to be a loose connection causing this type of troubles

Since we did not install and had no manuals for it...

I experimented. I was pretty certain the problem was not with the 'furnace' and was within the zone control. Removed T-stat wiring and equipment RH & RC wires then jumped R-W on each zone. Depressed the Time Delay Override to speed the process along. After doing this repeatedly for what seemed like forever, finally got a failure to show it was operational. Guess I was just not patient enough, new controller on it's way. Thanks, guys - Greg
