Floor Hole Covers where Radiators were?

I have stopped using the steam heat in my 1924 home. Before you curse me, my heat billed were $700 per month, and many radiator were not working. I now have gas heat with highest bill of $334.

I have taken out a few radiators in rooms that we are remodeling. What can I use to cover the holes in the floor where the steam pipe came up? Short of a new floor that is.

    Holes

My Mentor, one of the not yet dead men, had told me that back in the day they would cut the nub off of a baseball bat and drop it through the hole. They would then mark where the bat met the floor and cut the bat just slightly above that. Apparently with some sanding this makes a great floor plug. Cut some slices off as well to use for color matching.
Hopefully you don't have too many holes, or a good supply of old bats.

    Hisory and an appreciation

of such elegant solutions to a problem. The more I read here and get the feel for the history of this industry, the more I sincerely would like to share a beer with the people that make up this Wall. I am truely looking forward to Baltimore in April.

You could do a similar thing to what Guy is suggesting by going to the hardware store and buying a tapered replacement "chair leg", assuming the hole isn't too huge. Cut off whatever excess you don't need. My local hardware store has 6" legs for about $1.80 I think.
