Site Glass

One Pipe Steam System: My site glass appears to be leaking, though slowly and sometimes not at all. I first noticed it when I noticed a small puddle on the floor under the site glass. After checking the site glass I realized that there was a couple of water droplets near the top on the outside of the site glass and more of a pool of droplets at the bottom of the site glass (due to gravity I suppose). What does this mean? I don't recall having this problem before.

your sight glass washers are leaking. you should have a contractor clean your boiler and replace those washers. bob

    Gauge Glass

Would like to add.....Sometimes the glass itself wears out on the ends. You may want to replace the glass as well...

I agree with the above, but I would first just try gently tightening the nuts at the top and the bottom that hold the rubber washers (and glass) in place. Perhaps they were never fully tightened the last time the glass was cleaned (when it was cool) and when it heats up things expand slightly and a minor drip leak could develop. This has happened to me. Be careful not to accidently nick or crack the glass. Slide the two protective rods out first so you can get a good purchase on the nuts.
