what causes them to burn out?

Jack, If by power unit you mean the electromagnetic assembly that a thermocouple powers I don't think they "burnout". If you take one apart you will find just a few turns of some relatively heavy wire. I don't think the out put of a thermocouple could ever damage the windings. I think what happens is the pole pieces and the spring loaded disc that they hold become a little coroded which screwes up the magnetic flux making the electromagnet weaker. IMO. bob0 -
main valve
I agree on the pilot coil, I "fix" alot of them by cleaning out the center where the tcouple touches with a pencil eraser, I " fix" alot by unscrewing them partially and screwing them back in. The tcouple voltage is so low and resistance makes the magnet look bad. As to the main coil, a short somewhere sometimes takes them out, lightning hit, or usually just a bad solder joint internal to the valve.0
