Replacement chimey liner for oil fired steam boiler

We have a 68 year old house with 2 pipe steam heat (probably irrelevant to the problem at hand). The liner of the chimney slowly self destructed until it blocked almost completely, filling the house with smoke and apparently damaging the combustion chamber wall of our slant fin liberty boiler.

We had the chimney and flue cleaned out, and had the boiler cleansed to put it back in operation temporarily. The chimney cleaner felt there was no immediate safety risk from the deterioration that has occurred so far.

So here are my 2 questions:
    1. What is the best option for replacing the chimney liner? The chimney is roughly 40 feet tall, and there are signs that some of the mortar from the brickwork has been damaged (mortar pieces in the trap)
    2. Is it feasible or advisable to use a heat exchanger to capture the enerygy in the flue exhaust and vent out the side of the house?

Thanks for any ideas or recommendations

    chimney liner

You can use a power venter for your boiler, but do this only as a last resort. While they do the job, it's not the most desirable solution. Look into having a stainless steel liner installed in your chimney. Assuming the chimney is structurally sound, and large enough to accept the needed diamater for your boiler, it's the safest and easiest solution to your problem. Have a good sweep or mason check it out for you. This is definitely not a DIY project.

Masonry chims are good architectural devices

but poor mechanical devices for modern equipemnt. Your chimney is shot. It will continue to deteriorate, what there is left to do so and it does not meet code, nor will it ever. It is not safe and should not be used as it is. You have insurance issues here also. Talk to your agent. Z-flex offers a liner calculator. At 40 ft you may very well be able to drop one size. NFPA 31 allows a reduction in size with the manuf. approval.
Power venting is an option, a good one IMHO, but then again I represent Tjernlund, Use an SSII if you can). A PV will be your least costly alternative.
Your other alternative...and when you are faced with the cost of installing a 40' chimney liner you need to look at them all is to combine the cost of the liner and the re-sale value of the liberty and go with newer, better, etc. Good luck!
