Placement of baseboard heaters
Lou

I have a hot water heating system with baseboard heaters, dating to the mid 1950's. The baseboards are placed partially within the wall cavity of the exterior walls, approximately 2 inches into the wall. Are these properly located, or should they be more towards the interior of the rooms? Am I losing heating directly to the exterior? Any help would be appreciated.

You might be
There is probably no insulation behind the BB casing. As long as you have good air flow around the fin tube from the indoor air you should be OK. I would look for any air gaps or holes in the back of the BB casing where you may be getting air infiltration and caulk. If the BB casing seems very cold to the touch, you might try placing thin bubble insulation with reflective backing behind the fin tube to help insulate the fin tube from the cold metal casing. Make sure you do not interupt the convection warm air flow.0
