How about a Peerless Pinnacle? That Vitodens is really something!

    What's in a name?

Last week I had a customer who wants to change out a WM GV4 and replace it with a Vitodens. I felt bad about giving her the $9,300 quote, so I decided to give her the option of a Munchkin with a savings of almost $3,500. She said, "I don't want a boiler called a 'Munchkin' in my house!" She's willing to pay the extra cost just because of the name! I wish all of my customers were so easy to sell.

  • She asked for the Porche and you bring her a Dodge Viper?

I never liked that "Munchkin" name either. It reminds me of a box of doughnut holes from Dunkin Doughnuts. Anyway, she's not paying for a name. She's paying you to provide that name brand because she knows what she wants.

Viessmann's reputation for quality sells itself to the niche clients. We can thank Richard Thethewey and the "Radiant Mafia" for the Vito-visibliity.

Why do you feel bad about giving your clients what they asked for? She's willing to pay the extra cost for the value added machine. Don't you like selling good stuff?

The Munchkin is surely no Vitodens. I bring a good/better/best offering to the table. The HTP boiler is in the "better" category. (JMHO)

The bigger question is; can you make the heat emitters drop the temperature down to condensing conditions justifying it's appropriate usage? More often than not, condensing boilers are being installed where a conventional system would work just as well. Not just (MHO) This is the trend I'm seeing where I live.

    Gary,

I don't feel bad about giving my customers what they want. When I sell a design, I present what I think is the best sytem for the application. But I often include alternates to help ease the sticker stock. With a good presentation of the pros and cons of each design, it's amazing how many times the customer goes for the Porsche rather than the Viper. Most customers want quality and are willing to pay for it if they can be shown the added value.

I also have the challenge that we are on an island and the only boilers my suppliers sell (and deliver here) are: Burnham, Weil McLain, Buderus, Slantfin, Munchkin, and Viessmann. Others I have seen praised here on The Wall would cost too much to ship over.

    It's a rare day

that condensing boilers don't condense when piped properly with a nicely adjusted reset curve.

    WM change-out

There's really nothing wrong with the boiler. The HO thinks it's too noisy (it vents outside the bedroom window), there have been a couple of control mod failures, the plastic vent pipe (ultra flex?) has failed, the tekmar 4-way has froze up twice (we'll change that to a Viessmann 3-way),and the original installation leaves a lot to be desired.

I think it's mainly that she's into having the latest technology.
