what should be an average fuel usage per month for a 1200 sg ft. one story home located on the eastern tip of Long Island? The home was built in 1960 and has a new Burnham boiler installed.I heat my domestic hot water with a 30 gal Bock.I have all new Andersen double paned windows and have added extra insulation in the attic.
Thanks

lots of varaibles
My house is 1950's, 1100 sq ft or so, ranch, and I used about 110 gallons in December for heat and hot water, I'm in Massachusetts. We keep the heat at 67/68. Modern replacement windows and barely adequate insulation (yes, the floor is insulated)
I have a Viessmann with whole-house radiant and a Viessmann water heater.
If you used more than 170 gallons in December, get the contractor back or tighen up the house, or do both!
What kind of heat? baseboard? cast iron?

Ask your neighbors how much they burn.

It Depends......
On where you keep your t-stat , if you have kids that leave door open while YOU are not home, if you have three teenagers that take 30 minute showers........
Do you have adequate insulation? Any blatant air leaks like missing windows or attic scuttle openings? I will guess if you go over 800 gallons a year you could look at tightening the house up.
So far this year is colder than what we have had in recent years so it may not be a good comparison.
An investment in insulation will pay higher divedends than the stock market. I doubled the size of my home , but by insulating and replacing windows and doors I use less fuel than the prvious owner and do not rely on burning wood like he did. I also switched from Forced warm air to hot water but that is another story.0 -
was it expensive
to switch to hot water?0 -
Tom,
Yes, and no. It would have been if I were not in the business. I did all the labor and was very fortunate to acquire materials below cost or sometimes free. Sweat equity I guess. If installed new my heating and cooling would be in the $14,000. range. But like most people here on the wall I got a little carried away with it.0 -

just got oil delieved today
I just got my tank filled today and it took 153.5 gals. This was for a period of 45 days as I last got oil on 12/11/'03. I have a baseboard slantfin radiator system and I keep the stat @ 66-68 during the day and set it back to 62 at night. Like I stated I also heat my domestic water with oil and this is included in my oil usage.0 -
Hi to neighbor across the \"pond\"
Your weather and mine are probably pretty close and our homes are about the same . I'm running a Burnham V83hot water slantfin rads. I see a pile of wood. Do you also use a woodburner? I guess I'm doing ok as I used 103 gals in a 30 day period for heat and domestic. Thanks for the reply neighbor.0 -
no young kids just two \"old folks\"
Just us two "old relics" living here with a couple of showers a day and clothes washing and dish washing. I grew up after the depression and during the 2nd world war so I understand conservation and enjoy working at it. I make sure all efforts are taking to tighten up the place to conserve. I agree that spending money on insulation is money "well spent" . Congrads on your upgraded home.0 -
Slightly under 3 1/2 galls per day.A bargain!
Considring the price of Natural gas and propane, you were blessed with a gift. (as long as there weren't any frozen pipes).
Oil in this area still gives you the most bang for your heating dollar, bar none. A whole lot cheaper than paying for a plumber to repair broken pipes, and about 1/3rd less than a gas company customer would have paid, when figuring in all the "charges associated with the monthly cost" + fuel. JMHO. Chris0 -
No wood
Hey, I put in radiant to limit dust....no wood and ashes.
What pile of wood? That's 40 tons of stone wall around the patio.

what wood?
Sorry about that I thought that your stone wall was pile of wood. I guess the old eyes are going . Have a good one.0
