Frozen Pipes and CO

wrong when I walked in. Frozen pipes in the entire house right on the water. Plumbing and Heating contractor working in the house. I was called because they could not get the Heatmaker running. When I entered the house it felt very uncomfortable. When I got to the boiler room the combination smoke and CO alarm was going off, no one was paying attention. They were too busy with the frozen pipes and the boiler not running. A couple of kerosene heaters running full blast (to thaw the pipes). I quickly opened the sliding doors and got out and got my tester. When I came back in it was reading around 100 PPM in the house.
They immediately shut off the heaters and aired out the house. They also had the gas oven running upstairs, shut that off.

I wonder if I had not showed up what might have happened. DO NOT GET SO INVOLVED WITH YOUR PROBLEM THAT YOU BECOME THE PROBLEM.

This is a tough time of year be careful and work safely.

Tim what do you have ...

for a CO detector that tested the job? I was called out last week by a customer...gas co. was picking up CO off the Teledyne boiler that they had not cleaned/ serviced ...thats why I showed up to clean... I need to get the CO tools. kpc
  • Kevin, I start out with

a hand help Bascom Turner CO detector only, that is my safety tester for any environment I am going to enter.

For testing I use a Bacharach Pro 125 or a Testo 325 I have both. I always check them against one another. I also still have a set of the old Bacharach Fyrite bottles.

I am waiting for a TPI 712 and a TPI 735 (Combustible Plus measure % LEL on gas and CO) if my source for that tester ever comes through. I find that having a couple of different meters I am never without one. When they have to be calibrated you have a back up.

Timmie! The first thing Jim Davis tells you

in his class is to ever enter a house without your co monitor going - even the CO EXPERTS model. Mark Hunt Does it and I do it, an any heating call. We could've lost you , Pal. Mad dog

    Excellent post, Timmie!

Portable kerosene and LP heaters are a common sight around here, this time of year. Generally, but not always, the doors are open and closed enough to provide combustion air.

Don't bet you life on it, however. I have a small belt clip detector that I need to wear more often. Heat Transfer Products had this AIM brand available at discounted prices to their customers.

    Thanks for the reminder.

  • Mad Dog never fear

I always look at it this way...when everyone else in the house is still standing I am safe for the moment. I then go get my tester and carry it into the house. I used to have a belt monitor that I wore which detected both CO and Methane. Someone picked it up and never returned it. I need to get a new one. The plus is I do not get out on the road much any more, although this past few weeks has been Hell!!!
  • Hot Rod does that also detect

    Methane???

    Good question, Timmie!

Maybe I will load up on refried beans for dinner then slide the detector around to the back of my belt :) Would that work?

  • That might work,

the reason I asked is that AIM had a similar meter that detected both CO and methane for safety purposes.

It is not listed for Methane, but

if you eat the right foods and pass gas, it will register and sound the alarm for a brief time. AIM does carry a multitude of gas testors. We have a couple of different versions used for confined space entry, and our local fire departments use a few different versions also for air quality testing for saftey.
