how hot is the steam pipe that comes out of the wall? We have a similar problem w/an upper floor rad, and the pipe never gets hot. it's may be capped behind the wall.

One radiator not as hot as rest?
I have a farm house (1938) with origional cast iron radiators all appear to be in good shape. A new NewYorker boiler is in operation. I really have no problems except on room on the second floor never seems to get all that Hot. It is your standard height approx 2.5 ft high and about 3ft long. In comparison there is another radiator that is just as far away from the boiler and it gets plenty hot. Any ideas? I vented until the cows came home with no luck. The only thing I am wondering is if the vavle (which looks as if it should be replaced) is suck half closed.0 -
Radiator no all that hot
Acutally, the radiator does get hot but just not as hot as the others and thus is not really keeping the room as warm as the others. It is in my daughters bedroom and of course she needs extra blankets, etc.
I never felt just the pipe...I will do that to see if I can determine a temp diff. but this might not mean much since there is a huge mass sifference between the water pipes and the radiator. I am wondering if it has to do with possible water flow restictions in the radiator or feed/return legs to main. THoughts?0 -
steam or water
ben --
I assumed you have steam heat .... but I forgot to ask is it steam or hot water?
if water, then you may just need to bleed the radiator - manually let the air out of the side opposite the valve.
if steam, and you are getting some heat -- you can ignore my comment about the wall pipe. it's possible the boiler is shutting off (because the thermostat is 'satisfied' or because of pressure).

Radiator not all that hot
Thanks. It is water and we have bleed these and all the radotor quite a bit...there is no air left. Is thee any history with older radiators getting rusted internally causing restrictions. I did notice that the return pipe was somewhat cool even when the radiator is hot.0 -

still need help here ....
anything is possible -- i know this doesn't help you ... but if your rad is old, i assume it's possible that gunk & crud could clog up the line and prevent complete heating.
everyone: any other ideas?0 -
Radiator
If the radiator has a quarter turn shutoff valve to it,and it spins in circles... the valve may not be fully opened.(these valves say open/closed on handle)They have a hole to allow water to go into radiator...turn handle in small amounts with circulator running to find the opening in valve.0
