Boiler Short Cycling

I think my boiler is short cycling - how bad is this? It runs for about 45-50 secs, then the burners turn off for about 30, then back on. It's NOT the pressuretrol, LWCO, thermostat, or suction sensor. They're all on the entire time, the vent fan runs continuously. There's a 24V signal to a Honeywell S8670E ignition module constantly on - I believe this is the component that is cycling. Is it supposed to do this? It's a Burnham Independence PV for steam. Sometimes I get much longer burns, it only seems to start doing this after it's on a while. I thought it should run until the pressuretrol or thermostat shut it off? Does the ignition module need to be replaced? Normal? Thanks for your help!

It sounds like
you are loosing either pilot flame rectification to the ignition module or there is a drop in gas pressure causing this. I would advise having a professional take a look at this and to test the flame rectification signal to the ignition module. It could be any number of small things causing it such as a dirty pilot assembly or flame sensor, bad ignitor wire or corrosion of the ground wire connection. It could also be a bad ignition module, but always check the simple things first before changing controls. Hope this helps.

fire rate
Hi Glen,
Question for you. My steam burner/boiler was just serviced and the tech increased the fire rate from 1 G/H to 1.5 G/H. On the outside of the boiler the rate is listed at 1.25 G/H for 420 sq ft of steam. Is this dangerouse?0 -
What model
boiler are we talking about him upfiring? Let me know that, then I can make a determination as to whether it is OK or not. Complete model number should be on silver rating label on or near front jacket panel.

Old Weil Mclean
I have the version numer at home. It's probably 50 or 60 years old. I will post it later. Thanks!0 -

I thought you were referring to a Burnham boiler. All I can advise is comparing where you are firing this one relative to it's firing capacity in the old books. As a rule of thumb, boilers that old generally had multiple firing rates with a fairly wide range. That isn't the case with newer boilers though.
