Suffolk County Community College
For all of you guys on Long Island, the ribbon cutting ceremony for Suffolk County Community College's HVAC/R program was held today on the Brentwood campus. The event was a huge success. In attendance were a large number of council members, College officials, Kevin Rooney from OHI as well as members from the OHI board of directors, John Levey, Dan Holohan, Hugh Ficker, Chris Hirsch, as well as some of the students presently enrolled in the program. (sorry if I failed to mention everyone).
The event was covered by WLNY TV (channel 55, or 10 in some long island areas)and will be aired on the 11:00 news tonight. Sorry for the short notice.
Once again, thanks to all who helped over the past few weeks!0 -
I've heard
that making steam is more satisfying than making water...

Especially
on this boiler. Ron Jr. drop header works like a charm. Quiet as can be, and no bounce in the water line. The steam that blows out into the yard carries but a few drops of water. That's piping precision!Retired and loving it.0 -
It must not be working!
I had one of the facility people from the college come into the lab to see the new "toys" and I just couldn't resist firing up the steam boiler. I had my Raytek thermometer in hand as the system began doing what steam boilers get paid to do...
My colleaugue scratched his chin as the boiler continued to chug along as quietly as a church mouse and said, "this boiler's not working"...
"Why do you say that?" I asked, as the vent began getting hot and the main steam line started getting progressively warmer.
He said, "It's not making the banging noise that means the steam is coming up"...
"oh, I asked... so in order for the steam to come up, the system has to bang against the pipes?"
"That's right... All of the steam systems I worked on in the past, including the one in my house, makes a lot of noise... That's how Iknow it's working fine"...
As I pointed my thermometer at the section of baseboard on the wall, he peeked over my shoulder to find the thermometer registering a bun-warming 205 degrees.
"I think I should get this boiler fixed, huh?", I asked.
He just smiled and went along his merry way...
Thanks Dan!
Thanks Ron Jr.!0 -
Proof is in
the piping. ;-)

It was so quiet
when it was first fired up, the only sound was the radiator vent snapping shut. Can't say I've heard that one before...0 -
Alex, I'll e-mail the syllabus to you as soon as I get on campus this morning...0 -
Hey , it worked ?
I knew I would get one right sooner or later . I was glad to help out , it's for a worthy cause . I'm sorry I missed the grand opening . Anyone have a tape of the Ch. 55 segment I could dub ?0 -
I'm
just a newbie (or "homeowner" as I was politly called!) but I got to tell you Ron, the header was a thing of beauty. Everthing Dan talks about in the books about how quick and quiet steam heat is was proven. Granted it's only one section of baseboard, but you could actually feel the heat roll through the header and a short time later the vent snapped shut. The main vent (Hoffmann 75)shut without a peep.
I learned a lot from watching the real pros, and I am a true convert... Now, if I could get my landlord to fix our buildings header... and if the weather warm up so I could fix my house's header...0 -
<<<< Has the video...
I have the video of the channel 55 spot... I lent it to John Levey and I think he left the country with it... If your listening John, please bring by tape home...
When I get it back from Levey, I'll have it waiting for you when you come by for a visit, Ron...0 -
