Last month, we received an anonymous letter with $45.00 in it. All it said was "I owe you this from 35 years ago. Thank you."

We had firewood delivered more than a month ago. New guys as the ones we've always used were out of town. So, this bunch of Amish guys show up in a vintage 1950's truck and this has been some nicely dried wood they delivered.

A letter arrives today with a check from the guy for $10.00. Says he inadvertantly overcharged us by that much and felt badly because his new checks took too long to arrive and how he's been wanting to make this right.

If only everyone in the world were so forthright! What if everyone had a conscience?

    Hey Dave,

how about for every good deed done to you one politician is taken off your "....all politicians are------" list?

I wonder if the Amish work under Roberts rules.

    Nice story.

I was gone for the weekend. When I hopped in the drivers seat on monday morning I noticed a ten dollar bill and a note. The note said" sorry I was desparate for a wax ring, here's ten dollars I hope it's enough". Can I take credit for the first self service plumbing supply shop?

Yeah it depends what sect...there are Mennonites that are

even more hardcore than Amish...and then there are the real Anabaptists from Europe. The whole bunch really are fascinating. Mad Dog

    Telling the truth.

Jack, what's up with you defending politicians?

I read your post on PAH's other thread where you said something like the politicians are only people, they are us.

Agreed that you can't say ALL politicians are (fill in the blankety-blank-blank) They are human beings.

But from what I read of Dave's post and the links, the politicians of York that wanted to capriciously charge candle burners and torch users are IDIOTS! Sometimes when a person acts like an idiot, you just have to call the idiot an idiot.

In my lifetime, I've sure taken my turn as an idiot, but when I do it, there is no injustice to others involved, and I don't make money off the sweat of hard working people's backs to pay off my spending habits.

Absolutely LOVED reading a short interview with Bob Dole in this week's Newsweek. He ended the interview by saying something like: "I'm not running for anything, I can tell the truth now." Incredible.

So tell us a good story about a politician. I'm thinkin' one helped you out. Or maybe not?

    If you notice

Duncan, my responses have been made to comments about "ALL" politicians. Dave did not make his remark about those he was now dealing with, nor did those who made statements agreeing with him. I have been on the other side of the table and know the pressure on that side.

Quite frankly, in hind sight, Dave could have asked for a motion to table which would have prevented that board from doing what they did.

I have been elected to public office (school committee, twice) so that makes me a politician. I don't subscribe to the position of some who get elected that say they are not politicians. If you get elected, well that's that.

Someone else said something about all politicians and lawyers being in the same class. I only object to grouping those who achieve a certain level of expertise into one category.

At times, in their day, Lincoln, Adams, Truman, Jefferson, Roosevelt (both) and even Kennedy were not held in the high esteem they are now.

I certainly do not want to come off as thin skinned as it wouldn't have been possible to serve four years as an elected official or the last few on an appointed board if that were the case. Just adding my two cents.

Thanks for asking. Oh, did I say I love Politics. LOL

    Yes, I definitely noticed.

That's why I put ALL in capitals in my previous post. I realize that when we classify someone as "The Other" or "Them" or "Those People", it cancels them out as human beings, making it easy to treat them badly.

You don't come off as thin skinned at all, Jack. I just thought it odd you went out of your way to defend politicians. I also thought it was admirable you pointed out they're human beings too. It made me curious and I wondered why, what the rest of the story was.

Here in Teller County, our commissioners are nowhere near as idiotic as those in York. But unfortunately, their decisions are too often not based on common sense, and they sometimes outright manipulate the very folks they swore to serve. Makes it very easy for me to relate to Dave's situation. No, I've not been in office, but have close friends who are very involved.

You love politics? I can't say that myself, but they do fascinate me. You gotta have a sense of humor if you love politics!

    Honesty

When I was 10 I went to the corner drug store with a fountian conter. I purchased something and was given back my change. I was learnig how to count back my change and did it to find the cashier gave me a quarter rather than the nickle it should have been. I told her of this mistake and with that she got Mr. Goodwin the owner to tell him of my honesty. He said for bieng honest you can come here each day for 30 days and get a free what ever from the fontian counter as payment for your honesty. All my friends were enviuos as I sat each day having what ever I wanted for zipo. Honesty pays and is the honorable thing to do.

We were(well most of us) very honest persons

At one time. Saw a special quite a few years ago now. I believe it was the 25th Anniv. of the Woodstck Fest. Well they interviewed this guy that owned a local general food store there. He explained how they were trying to get these kids feed. Many did not have any money left on themselves ,so they made outIOU's. They took down the owner's address and said they would send the money as so as possible. Hey,you know something...this guy(the owner of that store) said every IOU was paid up.
So i guess the question now is...Where did we go wrong?

    Time to clear the air!

When I was a mere lad, I had grandparents who toiled long & hard to eek out a hardscrabble existance in a coal mining town. Without going into thousands of words to explain their ethics and manner of living, let's leave it at this - they were some of the most honest and caring people I've ever known who gave freely of their time and resources to those in need - without question.

If you remember back to the days of Jack Kennedy and how politicians were revered, you'll know how the political climate was in this country. Camelot.

One night, Pop-Pop made the statement that there was no such thing as an honest politician. My father & uncle jumped all over him and never once let him live that statement down. Pop-Pop died before politician mis-deeds became publicized and as the years passed, the number of politicians who fell from grace multiplied.

Pop-Pop loved nothing better than to sit up late at night in his humble kitchen with a vadalia onion, a hunk of sweitzer cheese and a yeungling (the brewery was in the next town). The stories and tales were many and I was fortunate to share many an evening by his side.

Dad & Uncle Steve often joked that whichever one of them died first, they were to look up Pop-Pop and buy him a beer and then apologize for raking him over the coals about his politician statement.

Well, Uncle Steve moved to the other side of the lawn about eight years ago & we've had many a chuckle thinking about the well educated engineer whose sense of pride was big having to eat humble pie while apologizing to Pop-Pop over that beer.

So, yes it's an outlandish statement to make that ALL politicians are dishonest, but it's getting harder to find the good ones every day.

God bless ya if you serve on a school board or council or in local offices and manage to maintain your morals, scruples and avoid selling out. The abuse heaped on those who serve is unbelievable and I wouldn't do it for all the tea in China.

Maybe there's sumpin in the water here, but this latest go-round with the City Council is but the needle in the haystack of crooked dealings that we see.

Here's a quickie. School board member works a back room deal to sell his land to - you guessed it - the school board. Resigns & a short while later the school board negotiates a deal for his farmland. Open market value? Bout 1 mill give or take 100 thou. He gets how much??? Three million dollars. Deal gets approval from the township politicians and moves forward faster than poop through a goose.

Our three county commisioners wanted a 24 million dollar baseball stadium so badly, they cooked the books to "borrow" 12 mill from other programs in the 12th hour of their terms in office. One of the incoming comish's filed an injunction at the last minute and that's now halted in its tracks. The company promoting the notion that York belly up for the 12 Mill - the same company that will own & manage the ballpark - won't open their books for accounting review by the City's accountants.

BTW, the City of York has (under pressure from those of us who spoke and haven't quit hounding them) agreed to review the fees this Tuesday night and the committee will be open to the public. We will be there to stand up and be heard.

    We didn't

    go wrong anywhere, Terry.

The terrible incidents make the news. Whether it's bad politicians or really bad, and mostly it seems by us Plumbers, heating systems.

Would Dave be so upset if the politicians did things his way? Would any of us?

You know, all in all, this is a great Country. I hope Dave wins his fight and proves that people getting involved make a difference.

I guess it's easier to do the right thing when there aren't millions of dollars involved.

Hey, why not do as Jackchips suggested and make a motion to table (or kill) the proposal at the next meeting?

My prediction: the board members will look like they swallowed a booger. They'll look off to their sides. Then they'll look down at some papers in front of them. They'll shift uncomfortably in their chairs. They'll look at each other. No one will say anything, maybe some muttering. Maybe someone will clear their throat. Maybe take a sip of water. Scratch an itch behind their neck. More paper rustling. Glance behind them, then at the ceiling. Then they'll move on to something else. A secret, previously prepaid "donation" of $1,000.00 to a "sympathetic" board member might get the motion seconded. Yes I'm kidding (about the donation).

No need to worry, though... while you're planning your strategy, they've already moved on to something else. As for the plumbers torch fees? They'll doublecross that bridge when they come to it.

What is it with York, Dave? Wasn't a past mayor of York brought up on charges or convicted of manslaughter at one time? Some race related issue?

    That was

Bud Dwyer. The GD news people played that on TV without editing and, get this, kids were home early from school that day. So, I gets to explain that one to my elementary school step-son. I saw the scene played in its entirety on the evening news. There was no excuse for showing something so graphic - either later on the news or at mid-afternoon on a day when school students were let out earlier than normal.

Fast forward to Bill Clinton whose activities bring sex education to the evening news and our second son who is just beginning to ask questions about sex. Thanks to ole Billy-I-can't-keep-my-pants-on-in-the-oval-office and the internet pop-ups, we have more of a conversation about appropriate sex than the birds & the bees type of thing. My, how times have changed!

But back to Bud and the awful playing of his suicide on TV. As with all things so graphic and awful, the public finds a way to deal with it. Sick humor abounded such as: "What color were Bud's eyes?" Answer - blue - as in one blew here and the other one blew over there. Or that he called the news conference so that he could give everyone a piece of his mind.

    Yup

That would be Charlie Robertson, an ex-cop who was on duty in 1969 during the race riots.

Charged with murder and acquited. We were on a neighboring rooftop replacing an HVAC unit the day he was arrested and arraigned. I have digital photos of him being escorted in and out. The media was in a feeeding frenzy. Here's one. You'll see George Stephanopolis here. We were on the national news as they shot an earlier scene that included the roof line. A friend in a neighboring State saw us and called the office to ask why we were there. The news boys all were trying to figure out how we managed to get our perch above the fray and how they could get up there with us. Our crane that we utilized to lift the new RTU into place ended up being trapped in the media frenzy and the car carrying the mayor damn near backed into my truck!
