Question?
When these were connected were the coal burning grates typically removed?
I've wanted for a long time to take temperature measurements on a gravity system operating under ORIGINAL conditions.
Saw a likely candidate a while back in a home for sale. Gas burner had been added but it [appeared] a very simple matter to remove temporarily and easily replace.
Still operating under gravity and even the old draft damper was still in place with everything [I think] there save the connecting chain!
Think I can get coal as well.
Last I noticed home still vacant, but perhaps buyer will be a friend...
Again, do you think the grates will still be there? (I couldn't be that nosy at the open house!)

nope.
but.....
I have a complete one, a smallish one, with the grates and shaker handle and everything. It was working when I took it out. I HAD to save it.
It's not close to you, though.

Thanks Noel
Rather suspected that they were removed. For the life of me I can't remember if that big, long handle was still on it or not...
I'm no longer licensed (and when I was it was only for general contracting) and carry no liability insurance so I DON'T TOUCH other peoples' boilers! Would sincerely have hired a friend to temporarily remove the burner (and give it a good cleaning and review) as "inticement" for my experiment.
