Amaing MZ mini boiler Gets HIGH MARKS from me

and probably have a better system. Hopefully one that uses fuel cell technology to heat hydronic fluid. However, today this boiler is good enough for me.

This little pup will work hard for my clients hard earned $ by running as efficiently as possible for the next five years (when it is scheduled for it's first S.S. heat exchanger inspection & cleaning.)

Life expectancy is about 30 years. Under ideal conditions even more than that. "That will be good enough for me."

What do you guys think of the MZ?

Gary

    outstanding product

Ours continues to work without asingle hitch, which is a good thing considering one sits atop a mountain 3.5 hours distant from here!

Congrats to Tom Stayre on his joining up with Pete on the MZ team.

    Another satisfied installer

Even though i don't formally work for Monitor anymore, it's still nice to see guys who finally install an MZ and see what we've been talking about for all these years.

Tom Stayer took my place at Monitor, and he's doing a terrific job. GO GO GO!

Does MZ have any plans to venture into the modulating boiler market? I have only looked at one MZ in my area and it seems to work great.
  • The local inspector didn't like it

and he failed my water piping because I had used Wirsbo Aquapex™ for the indirrect water heater's H&C mains. Made me tear it out and use all copper. Said he'd be back in the afternoon to see if I'd "done it right." He never showed up.

Told me that he "HATED those friggin boilers from Europe" and "that Fuc#@$ing PEX stuff Fu#@$@ Suc@$#s too. Not in my town" he said as he reluctantly green tagged my gas piping.

I had filed for a variance with the peoples republic of Massachusetts. However the Board only meets once a month and I missed the deadline.

Some of these inspectors around here really HATE their jobs way too seriously.

you can't use Pex in MA

on water lines you can't use PEX unless it is approved as a test sight. What city was it in?
  • Frank, there's never been a denial for Wirsbo variance in MA.

It is in Framingham MA. The inspector there loathes PEX tubing. Should have heard the old cremudgeon go on and on about how that plastic sh@# is the bane of the plumbing bussiness.

I find it curious that we're allowed to use CSST gas pipe but not PEX for water? I thought the plumber "protects the health of the nation" How on earth is PEX unhealthfull? CSST, now that's another story.

Knuckleheads must be sittin on the board.

  • Same old story. They keep the GOOD STUFF in Europe

Here it is. The THI series. Linear modulating, fully condensing heat source made by the same folks that brought us the MZ. Geminox INC. It's quite a machine. 108% efficiency?

    http://www.carfield.co.uk/thi5_25sep.html

I for one am sick and tierd of not being able to get my hands on some of the the most advanced heat sources in the world due to the arrogance and unwillingness of the foreign manufacturers executives to get their equipment properly certified for installation on this side of the pond.

By the time this unit becomes available here in the US, there will be another better unit being used in Europe. It'll be keept there till it becomes old technology. Then they'll pawn it off to us here in the states and we'll think it's the best unit money can buy. They'll just be trying to clear more room in the wherehouses for the newer, better equipment. Sad but true, as good as our little MZ is, it's old news to the rest of the world.

The good news is that we finally have a couple of US owned and operated companies that are begining to keep pace with the high tech boilers being produced overseas. I still like the Euro boilers. However, I'm begining to feel that my dollars might be better spent here within our borders if the Europeans are unwilling to share their nice toys with US.

Their site doesn't give the btu input nor output. Do they come in sizes to do a 4 or 8 room place?

Waltham inspector almost gave us a hard time with a Burnham Revolution series boiler. We had to explain it to him before he signed off. So maybe its the water here in Mass.? And maybe its something in the copper plumbing only for drinking water?

How much more are those boilers than say a gas burnham line? Do you really think that you can get parts overnight?

    TIA.

I want to know how they can get over 100 percent efficiency. Actually emailed them. Sounds like magic!

    TIA.

    MZ and the THI

The MZ has 2 inputs - 94,500 and 142,000. Output is the efficiency times the input. the lower the temp, the higher the output.

Regarding the THI - here's the deal with the cool Euro stuff - it's voltage and cycles. Euros use 220V at 50 Cycles. The modulation requires those cycles to operate properly. Monitor is working on it. The 108% efficiency is just a calibrated scale to show the proper comparison to the non condensing stuff, which is calibrated in a skewed manner so it doesn't look ridiculously inefficient.

There is no conspiracy to keep the good stuff out other than the ASME racket which is as obsolete as guidelines for buggy whip manufacturers (so to speak). The MZ has been rejected for ASME equivalence in PA even though it way exceeds the specs, it just doesn't meet them in regard to the thickness of the cast iron, since there isn't any. It has been approved as an equal everywhere else, though. Munchkin got theirs through in a backdoor deal, but that's the way it goes. Weil McLain did it the expensive way.

When more wetheads catch on, the more good stuff will come our way.

    Thats funny...

Viessmann didn't have any problems with their 220 blower motor assembly and making it compatible with 120 Volt American power...

Could you elaborate on HTP "back door" methodology of ASME approval?

    Inquiring minds want to know...
