call this AM for gas smell....

on entering the house CO meter was reading 1500 ppm. Furnace was in the basement, and CO readings down there were off the scale!

The lady that called, had an infant in the house. She drove Imediately to the ER. the furnace and water heater both will be replaced tomorrow.

the furnace had a cracked heat exchanger, and the water heater had some problems of its own.

Glad we won't be reading about this one in the news!

This time of year we see more and more CO problems, as people are closed up in their house with the heat on.

    You're a hero sir!

Never leave home without your test equipment, and NEVER enter a home without it!

You never know what you'll find!

There's a family that will enjoy another Christmas because of YOU!

    God bless!

    God Bless Ya

    Keep up the great work.
  • feels good doesn't it.

makes all the training and monetary investment seem very well worth it when you actually save someone..just think, if you were a technician without instruments it might have been you that died..i use a bacharach unit, and am so impressed with it that i would buy another on the spot if it crapped out..just so that i would not have to do a service call without it.

    Good Job

Although it's hard to do, at 1500ppm what you should do first is not stay any longer and immediately leave and call 911 while you can still speak clearly. Then go back and get the folks out. Kind of like on the airplane where you put on your mask first before you assist others.

    Sure makes a great

Christmas story, but actually it is a good story any time.
It is hard to believe that one moment of stupidity or ignorance could cause the loss of life. Makes me want to go home and check my house right now.

    the hardest part

of the story is that I work for a company that DOES NOT even have test equipment.

I have purchased a testo combustion analyzer, and an Ultratrac 2000 gas leak detecter/CO meter. This test equipment was purchased with my money, and I do not charge the company to use it, just knowing that I saved this lady and her baby's life made these expensive purchases worth it.

I have tried to get the company to pay for equipment, or at the very least training. I would like to take Jim Davis' training class, and will probably end up paying for it myself.

    Okay, I'm spooked!

What does such a tester cost? And what is the make and model of a good but reasonably priced CO detector? What does it cost to add the gas detector feature?

I know this has been covered in other threads, but now I'm listening....

    Nice job, Smitty

that Testo is your best friend on a service call.

When you go back to replace the furnasty, offer to test their stove if it's gas. Betcha the oven is spewing a lot of CO too.

    an update of the family

the lady was released this afternoon, her child was in severe condition, and will probably be in the hospital a few more days for observation.

the good news is they will both be OK.

The company I work for does not sell CO detectors, but she will definately be purchasing one now! probably from HD or somewhere, but she will at least have one!

the furnace and water heater was replaced, don't have digital camera, but took regular pics. will get them developed and post them.

Part of the problem also was the chimney was partially blocked. Old brick chimney, and a couple of the bricks had fallen down partially blocking the flue. We installed a new liner also.

I have not tested the gas range, but will advise, and probably test it for free.

    she is one lucky person!

    Jim

baught my Testo from Steve Ebels, what a great unit! talk to steve about pricing, think it was on sale when I purchased.

the ultra trac 2000 will detect NAt gas, propane, and various other gases. it can be programed to detect CO also. It has a lot of features I don't have programed in yet, and some attachments I do not have yet.

    very nice product!

    You know what's really scary,

Think what would have happened if you did not have the CO testors you bought yourself, and you had walked in that house unable to check for CO! You may very well have died along with your customer and her child :( Make your boss think about that one for a while!

Great job on saving lives, it's such a wonderfull feeling.

One suggestion tho, I wouldn't have let her drive, as she could have passed out at the wheel on the way to the hospital. As previously suggested call 911 and evacuate the house.

    Bacharach

We have and use about 50 of the monoxor 2's and they work great. If you plan to spend the money buy some test gas and check it at least once a month ( we check once a week) and whoever sells bacharach sponsors a free school about once a year. Plan to spend about $200 for a sensor after 2-4 years, and DON'T try it out on your recently started car exhaust, the 30,000 ppm can kill the sensor. Be careful if you check range ovens, make sure you let it warm up for a least 5 minutes or the reading will scare you, after that the non air free you record at the oven vent should not be over 150 ppm. ( air free it can be up to 800 and still legal) Check the top burners too, not over 100 at a foot.
