I CAME ACROSS A BOILER THAT HAD BOTH THE SUPPLY AND RETURN
PIPED OFF THE TOP FRONT OF THE BOILER.
SUPPLY AND RETURN ARE 8/10" APART AND BETWEEN THEM IS SOME SORT OF BALANCING VALVE. IT HAS A SCREW DRIVER TYPE HEAD ON IT AND WORKS JUST LIKE A NORMAL VALVE WOULD. THIS IS INTERNAL IN THE BOILER. FACTORY INSTALLED AND I HAVE NO CLUE. HELP!!!

    No name boiler

Did you take the panel off?
Is it cast iron or fin tube?
Chances it is a fin tube boiler with a balancing valve.
Take the panel off and look inside for the data plate.I can't believe you don't have more info than what you published here.
If there is no data plate, take all the specifics (dimensions, etc.)and start looking up Lochinvar, Teledyne-Laars, Ajax, Bryan, Raypak, AO Smith, and Weben-Jarco.

I should have been more specific. This is an old boiler, with a gas conversion burner. There is no data at all on the boiler. rusted, pulled off, whatever. It is a cast iron boiler. My question is, if this is a balancing valve,is it's purpose to restrict gpm to the system or rat race x gpm
    thru the boiler??
    Thanks
    DC.

    It might have been

a "starter" valve, which was opened to establish circulation thru the boiler, then closed to start the water circulating thru the system.

    How about posting a picture?

    balancing valve

Sounds like a bypass to protect the boiler return from cold water. Even my 43 year old York had this.
