Water noise in system
Mark R.
Member Posts: 40
I have a single loop system with a Weil McLain Gold Series boiler. It has been inservice a little over three years and has/is doing a good job. No noise until lately, I have noticed water noise when the circulator first starts. I have an Extrol #30 pressure tank, and figured that there is air in the system. What are some of the possible causes. I keep the make up water supply valve open all the time. I have a small single story house. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Mark R.

It's a Baseboard system
I neglected to say that my system is hot water baseboard.0 -
Noise
It sounds like air starting to accumulate in your system.
Air will continue to seperate from water over extended periods of time, that's the reason for auto air vents.
Check your automatic air vents, the caps should be loose, barely on at all. They also may need to be cleaned, some dirt or rust residue may have clogged them. Try pushing down on the inner air valve (with the cap off), you will get a squirt of water and air. If that doesn't fix it, replace them with cleanable auto air vents and don't forget to install a small valve (they're usually available) between the system and the vent, to allow easier cleaning and servicing down the road.0 -
Right On The Money!!
Mark, You were right on the money with your solution! I checked the air vent and the top had tightened. I took it off and pressed the core valve and got a Phfft of air, and then a squirt of water. I would guess it will take a couple days to remove any remaining air. Does that sound right? I really appreciate your help, and I think it is amazing how the professionals on this site can help a harry homeowner like me. I will keep you posted how things go. Thanks again. Mark R.0 -
air sound
I have noticed that with my 3 Year old Weil also. I have a new "Cleanable " Honeywell vent at the pressure tank . The vent took out the majority of the air in the system but I do notice when I am by the boiler a small surge of air in the pipes when the boilers internal mixing ciculators kick on. It acts like small amounts of air that get trapped in the boiler are kicked around when the internal ciculators are running. I have one zone with constant circulation (taco 007). I dont usually hear anything at the radiators. The air seems to move past the airscoop too fast to get caught.

Air Purging
Yes, it will take a couple days to fully purge, but then you should be back up and running.0 -
No water noise now!
I haven't heard a sound from my system since I found the tight vent cap and bled the small amount of air.
Thanks Mark Wolff for your help, I really appreciate it.0
