Death knell to telemarketing?

John R. Hall

Now that homeowners can transfer their home phone numbers to their cell phones, do you think that more of them will subscribe to a screening program -- effectively blocking out telemarketing calls from businesses like HVACR service contractors? Will this take a big chunk out of telemarketing as an effective business marketing tool?

I'd like your feedback here or to my e-mail address. I working on this for a future story in The News.

Thanks!

    An interesting point, John

One which I had not thought of. Those who port their home phone numbers to cell phones will now get telemarketers calling their cells.

But I believe most telemarketers have software on their auto dialers that will hang up if the number connects to a cell phone. No additional service must be purchased by the phone owner.

That is one way that the hard-wired phone gadgets work - they imitate the signal that the cell phone makes so that the harrassing agency - oops - I should say, the telemarketing professional's phone dialer thinks its a cell phone and will hang up.

Sounds like telemarketers will hear a lot of clicks, eh? I just hope it doesn't bring back door-to-door cold calling!

    telemarketing

Anything that would spell the end of telemarketing should be viewed as a "good thing (tm)"

I refuse to purchase anything from a company that uses said "effective marketing tool". Not just from the telemarketer, but from the company they are working for. So it's more anti-marketing than effective marketing.

    Here's a HO perspective:

I don't do business with contractors that telemarket. Around here, anybody worth using as a contractor has no need to telemarket. The problem is getting worked into their schedule.

    For some strange reason......

I STILL get telemarketing calls on my cell. (my only phone) When I ask them where they got the number, they hang up!

Much like I did with my home phone, everyone gets 1 chance. If they call back or call again, I get the name and address of the company, and send them a BILL. Same as I would do for 1 of my customers taking my time for service.. They ARE taking my working time, on top of calling ME on a phone that I have to pay for incoming calls.

Get the name of the company, or ask to speak to a supervisor. If they pass you through to a superior, make sure you give them your name and number. (ask for a conformation and I guarentee you'll never be called again.)
If they call you again, you have a case against them. I got the 2 Boston newspapers to stop calling me , on average every 3 nights, by sending both a bill. Never heard from them again. Chris .

    Door-to Door

Slammed doors and shotguns stopped it before, they can do it again!

wait until they start \"slamming\" your cell phone #'s

Remember the days when long distance companies used to "slam" you over to their service? Im sure thats going to be the next big consumer complaint
