Does anyone know how often it is best to ....

....to drain the water/sludge from a two-pipe vaccum vapor system. Some technicians say once a week in the heating season, while others say much less often (once a month or so).

Does it make a differeence one way or another?

Thank you, Steve

    If you're talking about a low-water cutoff

with a drain at the bottom, once a week is the minimum. If you have a probe-type cutoff, it should be tested at the beginning of each heating season and the boiler flushed out if the water appears dirty.

If you're not sure what you have, post a picture here. We can identify it.

Thank you Steam Head; it is a....

Weil-McClain 478 series oil powered boiler (with Reillo burner) and with a McDonnell and Miller Series 47/47-2 Mechanical Water Feeders/Low Water Cut-Off.

I do not have a photo, but hope this helps (info on the water drain is attached).
There is a little hammer in my system, and it might be related to built up sledge preventing complete retun flow. I am relucatant to allow just anybody give it a flush, because they might not do it right and cause a larger problem. I hear the term S-quick (or something to that effect) as the flussh product to be used.

I see you operate out of Maryland -- too bad you were not closer to LI. We could use a serious steam company here.

    Thanks again, Steve
  • There are some SERIOUS steam contractors on Long Island.

You do mean New York, right?
