Another steamer for the wall

So I get a phone call for no water, possible freeze up, and no heat. Guy says oil company came out, boiler and WH are fine, but the LWCO tripped because the pipes froze. (Weekend home) So I repair broken water line and go to fire the boiler and what do I find? New (11 Months) Peerless oil boiler, steemer, put in by, here we go again, a side jobber. I took one look at it and asked the homeowner if it worked. He said very well and it only makes some clunking noises, "but steam is supposed to", he says. I said yea, sure.

Now here is the best part. It's in my nieghbors house. I cut the guys lawn when I was a kid. I plow his driveway every year. Two service trucks and an installation truck sit across from his house on a hill where you can't miss them. He's even been in my shop. He says he never knew I did plumbing and heating work! He called as a nieghbor to see if I could help him out and to see if I knew a plumber. This shocked the hell out of me. This guy must be nuts!

Any way, I think I will be doing his sevice work now. I did not have a camera , but I drew a sketch of the steam piping. No swing joints, water jumping like crazy. He's not concerned about it, either. Maybe in a few years when it cracks, I will replace it and do it right. I tried explaing the problems, but he did not seem interested.

Sorry about the rant, but this stuff kills me.

Jay Leno's Jay Walkers are all around us. We ocassionally get the same thing EARTHFIRE MECHANICAL. We get calls for towing and flat tire service and have had irate people screaming at the person answering the phone "but your a mechanic you have to fix my car"

Tell him what YOU WILL!!! be doing...when YOU WILL!!! be doing it and what IT WILL COST him. He HAS NO CHOICE....if he doesn't want to listen tell him don't ever ask me for help again. I've been in your position many times, and believe me, if you don't make things crystal clear for this neighbor - even at the risk of being called a heating nazi or osha man (I;ve been called both...among other things many times)- you will someday be implicated in the boiler's failure or worse: "We'll you looked at it last year, and you didn't say it was dangerous or anything..." Condemn it and fix it or wash your hands of it. Mad Dog
