by building up sludge in the pipes and preventing proper retun?

If so, how might it best be cleaned?

It is a two pipe, vacum-vapor system and the hammer is at the early part of the cycle.

    It can

Clean that boiler real well, and see if it quiets down. If it doesn't, isolate the area of the banging and check for bad pitch or a clogged return.

    Thank you Steam Head

    Thank you Steam Head.

Is there a better way for my Technician to clean out a two-pipe, vacum vapor system (i.e., I hear there is a cleaner that stays in the system, versus another type that needs to be flushed out, etc).

Also, are there any downsides/risks to be carful with -- I hope my Tech know his business, but not always so I like to double check.

I knowe the excat pipe/section of pipe that is banging. It is not a return pipe, but right off one of the branches of the main steam pipe.

Thank you for any further advise!

Is this an old or new boiler. I wouldnt put any thing in a boiler. Some boiler manf. will void the warrenty on the boiler if any chemicals are put in it. Also some chemicals can and will plug up vents and I think it might cause short cycleing in the steam boilers. Steam head is the best person to ask. I am always on here learning something new from his advice. And I use it in the feild. I am a note book junkie! Good luck

    Pressure?

You may want to see if the pressure is within the correct parameters.

A vapor system should never go much above a pound - tops! If the pressure is over that, water may be backing out of the return and blocking the vent piping.

    This would cause banging/hammer.
