oil fired water heater locks out
Stew
Member Posts: 1
I am an Hvac contractor in upstate NY. I recently serviced an oil fired water heater for a customer. I replaced nozzle, oil filter, cleaned did a cumbustion test on it, ect.
He told me he had to hit the reset about once or twice a month before I serviced it, now he said he has to do it more often.
I have gone back and checked the transformer, flame eye, ect,ect all are ok. The oil tank is about a foot away and there is also a furnace connected to the same one pipe line. Both are Beckett burners. The furnace has no problems
Any ideas of what I should check or change next??
Thanks Stew

I get a reset problem the most important info to get from your customer is what happens when he presses the reset? Assuming a non delay control does the burner light smoothly and immediately or is there a delay with a bang or a puff of smoke when it lights? If it is delayed it is frequently an ignition problem. If it lights and runs smoothly I would look at the cell cell wiring or the primary control it self.Just some things to look at based on my experience there are many other things that could cause this but I have found it to save time if you start with the most likely things and then go on from there.

Something I would add to what John has suggested is checking the vacuum with both the water heater and furnace operating at the same time.

Or Maybe ....
A dead spot on the burner motor? There is an excellent article on checking motors on Alan's Just For Teks page(thanks to the late, great John Gates who gave Alan all the info for us all to be able to still see!) at Oil Tech Talk. Chris0 -
checks
Burner coupling, should have changed pump strainer(if it has one), You might also have an air leak and/or a problem with the furnace running also like Alan said. Key is i think you toched something that was giving him trouble and now it is worse...that sounds like air leak to me. Fill us in when you get it.
