vaccum breakers

Is there any reason why a vaccum breaker would be on the supply side of a steam coil? Not sure if it will make a difference, but it is down stream from a modulating coil.
Thanks in advanced.

  • The coil wouldn't drain after the valve closes.

  • The coil wouldn't drain after the valve closes.

The vacuum breaker lets in air so the water can get out. The coil would freeze, if outside air is introduced through this unit.

  • Vacuum Breakers

usually are installed on the outlet of the steam coil. If the vacum breaker is installed on the inlet it is O.K. as long as it is down stream of the automatic steam regulator.

    Noel,
Why wouldn't a big air vent be even more appropriate on the shell?

  • I was thinking Fan coil

    but either would work.

On the ones I cared for, there were 2-pipe traps on the coil outlet, and vacuum breakers after the control valve to let air in.

I'd bet that a drip, right after the control valve, into the dry return, would do the same trick. Let air in and relieve the vacuum. Until traps got neglected, and the coil freezes.

I like the Vacuum Breaker better.
