black & white is a sulpher stick applied with the heat of a torch. worth a shot. fairly easy for a man with mechanical ability. been around about a hunnerd years.to braze it i would do it on a bench and pressure test. very time consumming.

    Radiator Repair

Can a 1 inch crack in a radiator be repaired or must it be replaced? I have an old (1929) two pipe steam system. The garage has a 12 foot long continuous bank of radiators (about 5 or six radiators contected). I noticed a crack in the middle of the bank of radiators last year. My plumber suggested using JB Weld to repair it but it did not hold. I had to close the valve on the garage radiator because I was loosing steam. But now the rooms above the garage are too cold.

    RAdiator Repair

Thanks for the feedback, but what is black and white. Can I do this myself or do I need a plumber.

My plumber mentioned brazing it, but he was concerned about cracking.

I've heard of two successful strategies for brazing cast iron:

    1) Heat the ENTIRE object to 600° or so--not very practical with a radiator.

    2) When dealing with a crack drill small "strain relief" holes at the VERY ends of the crack.

Cast iron can be welded bus as someone said it has to be preheated and cooled down slowly. Check the yellow pages for welding shops. If you can't find one check with your local Caterpillar Dealer's service manager. Although they probably can't weld it for you they usually have a vendor who welds castings for them and should be able to direct you to someone who can help.
