steam relief valves

I am confused about the piping out of steam safety relief valves on boilers.I see some valves which are piped out side (with vertical drips).I also see some which are piped down to drain.I have even contacted local inspector who only can refer to A.S.M.E. section 1v which states 1 elbow only and down to within 6" of drain.Do hydronic boilers and steam boilers have the same codes for piping of relief valves?? any help or resources is greatly appreciated!!!

    U.M.C.

as it pertains to hot water boilers requires the terminus to be WITHIN 18" of the floor.

However, the U.P.C. states that relief valves from a water heater shall be terminated within 4 to 6 inches of the floor. So I tell my studenst, that if they want to get their jobs passed to take it to within 4 to 6 " of the floor...which is "within" 18 inches of the floor.

I've always terminated my steam relief terminus' the same way and never been denied.
