is there any way to rate and compare the quality of fin tube baseboard? Is slant fin beter than sun temp (2 brands picked at random), or is base board baseboard as long as the btu's are the same?

    Stcik with Brand names

True, there's nothing realy high tech about copper fin tube. I guess more it has to with baseboard styles and some brands have larger/more fins to create high-output models. These usually have 9" high casings.

    I've noticed

some difference in the thickness of the metal enclosure, from brand to brand.

I think Slant Fin, by far, has the easiest to open and close damper strips. I stay away from the bottom model and use #30 or better Slant Fin. I like the SF hinged end caps best, also. I hate sliding end caps up and down to burp a little air at the bleeder 90's!

Of course the biggest challange is getting product, regardless of the brand, that hasn't been dented in shipping. Always check before you accept the order.

My last Slant Fin orders came in plywood containers. Make a huge difference in the condition of the product when it gets to my shop :)

  • Fin/tube baseboard quality? Now that's an oxymoron.

I so unkindly refer to BB as "cheap heat". I have yet to come across a residential grade BB I can say is a "quality" product. (sorry Noel)

Go with a brand name such as one of the two you mentioned. They are bolth good products and allways check your order before you drive away from the supply house. I suggest taking them out of the box because sometimes, you just can't tell. But hey, who really has time for that? It's cheap heat, so most guys will just "slam it in" anyway.

I have often wondered how many liniar feet of baseboard heat convector cabnets are returned anually? I alone have rejected hundreds of units.

If it's quality BB you want, make the jump to commercial grade heat convectors. JMHO

Ever wonder why we still so commonly refer to them as radiators? They're more convective than radiant aren't they? How are they board like anyway? Nails or screws? Over sheetrock or ontop of the stud wall?
