    Old Mansion Gorton Retrofit

    ...following Steamhead's lead, I installed 3 Gorton #2's in place of a Hoffman 75, 4A, and a Hoffman 5....still takes 15 minutes...after 10 minute warmup...for steam to travel across basement(2 mains -110' 4")...Does anyone know where the formula's are in Dan's book for cubic air in a pipe?...I've looked for it and can't find it...guess I'll get a few more Gorton's and get'em in...John.

I actually had the opportunity to see this old beauty today; it was the first time I got to see such a system!

All I can say is WOW. It must have taken 6 men to hang and turn some of the pipes and valves installed in this beautiful home. And to see a 4" main run over 100' with a perfect pitch is incredible.

Thank you John for taking the time to show me around your breath taking estate and maybe we can get some pictures of that heating system up here soon.

    Jamie

    Each of those mains

has 9.9 cubic feet of air in it, and a single Gorton #2 will vent about 5.5 cubic feet per minute at 2 ounces pressure. Those vents you installed should have done the job, John. However, we can't see inside those pipes, and they may have more internal resistance (from rough walls, improper reaming or similar) than usual. Try another #2 on each main and see what happens.

Also, has that boiler been down-fired, and have you checked its rating against the installed radiation?

I have two more Gorton's coming this week.....I think the problem is that the returns are vented, but the mains are not...so we wll do that...I will redo the load calculation...initial calculation was 1700 edr versus 4750 edr(1700 included 40% pickup), but...I'll redo because it doesn't make sense...burner(double w-m lgb 15's) has had a few burner trays removed by local plumber some time ago ...easy enough to install....doesn't seem enough to be material....One possible
thought...I have a lot of indirect radiators on the first floor...these are not vented...but a main vent should handle this...john

Maddog...I have a Gold Coast place (unfortunately) here in Pennsylvania...it is an old Broomell...I have, with Frank's advice, begun to vent the returns...it is amazing to me that this system was not properly vented by its previous owners....???...I am at 45 minutes now, and am going to keep venting until I get it where I need it. I guess rich people just give up and pay the high bill...I will do a load calc over the weekend and see what this brings up...have a great Thanksgiving, and be sure to wish the same to Steamhead if you see him...John
