Periodic Boiler Flushing

Do you believe in flushing old oil fired boilers and one-pipe steam systems periodically or only if they specifically need it? Do you recommend it a certain minimum amount?

What symptoms will lead you to recommend or perform a flushing...spitting air valves, etc.? What chemicals, if any, do you like to use? Are there any you avoid?
