HOW DO I KNOW WHAT THE CAPACITY OF A CENTRAL A/C UNIT IS IN BTU/HOUR?
THE DATA PLATE DOESN'T LIST IT AS SUCH.

    what model

What is the make and model. The capacity should be listed on the rating plate. If not in BTU's then in tons of air conditioning. 1ton = 12,000 BTU's

    forget the model#

i'm seeing unit after unit without this information or i'm missing something very obvious.
when i go into a backyard and the unit is tucked next to the house where should i be looking.

    Where to look

There should be a permanent tag with the manufacturer's name, the model, the serial number and the electrical data.

I suppose it could be inside the control enclosure, but normally it is not.

The cooling capacity is usually NOT given on the name tag in BTU/Hr. If you give us the make and model we can give you what you need.

    check the nameplate

Different manufactures have different model numbers, but they generally have similar tonage nomenclature.

    For example Trane: XL 024 = 2 tons, Carrier DK 024 = 2tons
What you need to check are the numbers immediatly after the first few letters. These numbers usually reprsent the btu's . 12,000 btu's = 1 ton , 012=1 ton, 018=1.5 ton, 024=2 tons...

    Hope this helps

    Tony,

If the model number and serial number plate is missing and you know the manufacture you can get the name plate off of the compressor and call the manufacture with that info.
